Inside the 6th Grade Online Homeschool Math Curriculum
The 6th grade math is often where parents start asking, “Wait… when did math get so complicated?” So I chose this level to review but Mrs. Peters’ Math offers classes for the whole of middle school math and high school math.
6th grade math was actually when I started transitioning to outside help — and yes, you have my full permission to do the same. It’s still very much homeschooling, even if you bring in support to teach certain subjects. Honestly? Sometimes that’s the wisest move you can make to support your children (and your sanity) moving forward.
While I didn’t personally use this level with Marc (he’s an 8th grader wrapping up Algebra 2 now — no, I can’t quite believe it myself), I spent a lot of time going through the materials, participating in the live classes, reviewing assignments, and exploring the student portal. And what I saw? It’s solid. Really solid.
Mrs. Peters has created a middle school math program that walks the line between structured and supportive, with a strong focus on helping students truly understand key math concepts before moving on. There is no endless busywork, no racing through just to finish. Each lesson is live, paced intentionally, and grounded in real understanding.

Because honestly? She’s the reason this whole thing works.
I don’t know how Mrs. Peters does it — truly. She’s teaching multiple grade levels, meeting live with students three times a week per class, organizing everything inside Canvas, answering questions, grading homework, offering videos, and still managing to be one of the calmest, most patient, and accommodating instructors I’ve seen online.
There’s a steadiness to the way she teaches. There’s no overwhelm, no guilt-tripping the kids for falling behind or not understanding something right away. She gives space, encourages questions, and treats kids like learners.
She’s also incredibly organized, which honestly is the only way a program like this can even function across so many levels. But beyond the systems and structure, what really shines through is her dedication. You can tell she loves what she does, and it’s not just about teaching math. It’s about helping kids feel capable in a subject that so often makes them feel small.
She knows what it’s like to teach in public school. She knows what it’s like to homeschool her own child. And she brings that experience — both sides of it — into the way she teaches.
I’ve reviewed a lot of programs. And most of the online ones, frankly, feel like products. Mrs. Peters Math feels like a person and that makes all the difference.

Honestly, even if they do attend live, it’s nice to have the option to rewatch when something doesn’t click the first time (because we all know it happens).
3. Canvas Hub
Classes are hosted in Canvas. It’s where you’ll find:

Instead of dry PDFs or repetitive drills, students get to work in structured Google Docs that walk them through the math step-by-step and they get to play a mini puzzle game every time they get an answer right. This also means kids can easily score 100% on all homework because they get real-time feedback.
And there are no tight deadlines, kids have two weeks to submit their homework.
And yes, there are notes, too! Kids can print guided notes before class and fill them in during the lesson — which helps with retention and makes reviewing easy. This setup gently encourages independent study habits, while still giving them a strong support system when they need it.
There’s also a free online math textbook linked as a reference. Mrs. Peters doesn’t teach from it, but it’s there if your child wants more examples or if you, as the homeschool parent, want to peek behind the curtain a bit and reinforce what was covered in class
Bottom line? The whole setup is thoughtful. It respects your child’s learning style and your time as a busy homeschool mom. You don’t need to chase down materials or guess what’s next — it’s all there, laid out clearly.
What I Loved About Mrs. Peters Math (And a Few Things to Consider)
When I started reviewing Mrs. Peters Math, I wasn’t looking for bells and whistles. I wanted to know if it actually worked for real homeschool families. If it respected kids’ learning styles, supported parents, and delivered what it promised.
Here’s what stood out to me.
What I Loved
A real teacher who really teaches.
I know that sounds obvious, but you’d be surprised how many online math programs aren’t much more than a slideshow with a voiceover. Mrs. Peters shows up live, explains concepts with patience and clarity, and encourages students to ask questions. She teaches and she cares.
Homework that builds mastery, not stress.
Her assignments are interactive and thoughtfully designed. Students get to work through problems in Google Docs that provide step-by-step feedback. Mistakes aren’t punished, they’re opportunities to learn. Most students can achieve close to 100%, not because it’s easy, but because the system is designed to help them succeed.

Canvas can be chaotic depending on who’s running it. In this case? It’s as tidy and clear as you’d hope. Each week has everything students need, from lessons and notes to games and extra practice.

Two full weeks to complete homework. Live lessons with recordings. Flexibility without losing accountability so students can review at their pace without spending too much time on repetitive work. If you’ve ever tried to fit math into a week where the dishwasher broke, the toddler got sick, or your teen suddenly “forgot” how to multiply fractions, you’ll appreciate this.

This isn’t a public school curriculum thrown online. It’s built from the ground up for homeschool families, by a teacher who’s also a homeschool mom herself. She understands the balance between structure and flexibility because she’s lived it.
A Few Things to Consider
You can’t preview a live class.
While there’s plenty of information on her site and she’s very open to answering questions, there’s no way to sit in on a class before enrolling. But reach out to Mrs Peters for help if you want to understand the program more. She responds thoroughly to all the questions.
No parent portal.
Parents use the student’s login to check lessons and progress. It’s not a deal-breaker, but it would be nice to have a separate parent view.
If you’re looking for a hands-on teacher who will walk alongside your child (and take some of the math load off your shoulders), this program delivers. If you’re looking for a quick-fix, self-paced online math program with zero parental involvement, this probably isn’t it.

Mrs. Peters’ Math vs. Mr. D Math
I can’t help but compare Mrs. Peters’ Math to the online homeschool math curriculum we’ve been using and loving for the past five years — Mr. D Math.
We’ve used Mr. D since Marc started Pre-Algebra and he is now beginning Precalculus, and it’s been amazing for him. He prefers a flexible program with the option to move at a faster pace, and Mr. D delivered exactly that. Marc even participated in the live classes, which — much like Mrs. Peters’ — bring the human touch into math. Both teachers are approachable, skilled, and genuinely care about their students.
That’s something I’ve come to appreciate deeply as we made the transition to higher levels math. A real teacher guiding students. Not just videos. Not just slideshows. A person.
That said, the two programs are designed with slightly different learners in mind.
Mr. D Math is fantastic for students who thrive on independence and enjoy moving at their own pace or even a faster pace. The live classes meet once a week and the self-paced classes (which is what we use) can be done at any time and speed. Homework and quizzes are auto-graded, giving students immediate feedback without waiting for a teacher to review their work, even if their Honors sections are manually graded. It’s a great fit for kids who prefer more independence and to work at their own pace.
Mrs. Peters’ Math, on the other hand, is a better fit for students who need a more guided, steady pace. She meets with students live three times a week, answers their questions in real time, and adjusts the class flow to make sure everyone understands before moving forward. Homework is interactive, designed to build mastery, and personally graded by her, offering both accountability and support.
In our experience:
- Mr. D Math worked beautifully for a student like Marc, who enjoyed a faster pace or for kids who don’t struggle much with math.
- Mrs. Peters’ Math would have been the program I chose if Marc had needed more frequent teacher interaction (unfortunately, being international, the time difference is always an issue for us), real-time feedback, and the kind of patient, steady instruction that builds confidence over time.
Bottom line?
Both programs offer excellent teaching and real human connection which, honestly, puts them ahead of most homeschool math options out there.
But the right choice depends on your child’s learning style:
- Want to encourage independence, have limited time and a fast-paced learner? Mr. D Math.
- Need steady guidance, accountability, and personal feedback? Mrs. Peters’ Math.
