Mr. D Math’s Beginner Blockchain Course and AI Homework Helper | Review

Inside: Mr. D Math now offers a blockchain beginner course and an AI-powered Homework Helper. I went through both. Here’s what’s inside.

Marc has been with Mr. D Math since 6th grade. Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, Precalculus, even their Study Skills course. It’s one of our most-used homeschool programs and the reason I stopped worrying about math years ago.

So when I saw that Mr. D Math is now offering a blockchain course. I was immediately curious because Marc already enjoys coding and STEM projects.

Marc’s finishing 9th grade, he already codes, and he just wrapped up a programming course. A summer blockchain project sounded like a natural fit for a STEM kid looking for something different. I signed up to go through the course myself first. Here’s what I found.

What’s Inside the Blockchain Course

The course is called Blockchain Beginner – The Genesis Block. It covers 11 lessons with 34 assignments, and it’s hosted on the Mr. D Math platform. The content was created by CryptoTutors, a blockchain education company that works with corporations and universities. Mr. D Math brought them in as the subject-matter experts.

The lessons cover a lot of ground: how money and monetary systems work, what cryptocurrency actually is, how blockchain technology functions, digital security and scam prevention, how to evaluate crypto projects through research, civic engagement around blockchain policy, and career pathways in Web3. Each lesson includes a mix of video content and auto-graded knowledge checks, followed by an essay assignment that gets submitted for teacher grading.

This is not a coding course. It’s not a trading course. It’s a digital literacy course that uses blockchain as the lens.

What We Liked & Works Well for High Schoolers

1. The Essays

Every unit in Blockchain Beginner – The Genesis Block ends with a research-based writing task that requires citations, original thinking, and structured submissions.

One assignment asks students to interview three people about scam experiences, identify at least five red flags across the stories, and write a personal safety plan.

Another requires a 2–3 page report explaining blockchain technology with a hand-drawn diagram and a glossary of 10 key terms.

A third asks students to research real companies using blockchain, create a comparison table, and explain the two most interesting use cases they found.

These aren’t fill-in-the-blank busywork. They require research, writing, and analysis.

2. Scam prevention

The course presents realistic scenarios — a phishing text from what looks like your bank, a fake giveaway on social media, an email offering guaranteed returns on a new token — and asks the student to decide what to do.

This isn’t crypto-specific knowledge. It’s digital safety that every teen who uses a phone needs to understand. The security section goes deep into SIM swapping, two-factor authentication, password management, and how to spot fake customer service. Even if your kid never touches cryptocurrency, this content is relevant.

3. Use cases

Students learn how Boeing uses blockchain to track aircraft parts, how luxury brands use it to verify product authenticity, and how blockchain protocols are being used to protect intellectual property in the age of AI. This is the “why should I care” section, and it’s the part most likely to spark a conversation at your dinner table.

A Few Things Worth Knowing as a Parent

  • The course covers adult-level material, which is part of what makes it challenging and worthwhile for a motivated high schooler. The instructors are industry professionals, so the tone is more like a college seminar than a typical homeschool class.
  • One lesson walks through setting up accounts on platforms like CashApp and Coinbase. The course gives you the flexibility to work through this section or focus on the conceptual and security content instead — we chose the latter since Marc’s not ready for his own accounts yet.

How We’re Using It

We’re treating this as a summer project. Marc is working through the essay assignments as writing practice — the research reports pair nicely with the analytical writing skills he’s been building for essay writing. We’re focusing on the sections that build real understanding: how money systems work, how blockchain technology connects to industries Marc is already interested in, and how to protect himself online. That makes this feel like a practical introduction to blockchain for a STEM-focused high school student.

If nothing else, the security and scam prevention content alone was worth going through. We’ve already had two conversations about phishing and SIM swapping that wouldn’t have happened otherwise.

Mr. D Math AI Homework Helper: A Quick Look

Mr. D Math has also rolled out an AI-powered Homework Helper for current students. It’s a virtual tutor that’s synced directly with the Mr. D Math coursework, so the help your kid gets matches what they’re actually learning.

The key difference from something like a generic AI math tool: it doesn’t give answers. Instead, it asks guiding questions and breaks problems down step by step so the student works through the solution themselves. If you’ve ever worried about your kid using AI to shortcut their math homework, this is designed to do the opposite.

There are four ways to use it:

  • “Can you help me solve a problem?” — Walk through a problem with guided support.
  • “Find Mr. D’s Mistake!” — The AI presents a worked problem with an intentional error and challenges the student to find it.
  • “What mistakes do students typically make?” — Shows common errors for a problem type so students can learn to avoid them.
  • “Pull a problem from my coursework.” — Generates practice directly from the student’s current lessons.

The “Find Mr. D’s Mistake” mode is the most interesting approach here, because it flips the dynamic. Instead of the student asking for help, the AI is asking the student to teach. That’s a higher-level skill than just solving problems, and it’s the kind of exercise that actually builds confidence.

Right now the Homework Helper is only available for current Mr. D Math students. Eventually it’ll open up to non-students as well.

I tried the “Find Mr. D’s Mistake” mode myself. It gave me a problem — solve for x: 2(x – 3) + 5 = 3x – 7 — with a worked solution that had one intentional error baked in. When I typed “I don’t know,” it didn’t just reveal the answer. It walked me backward: “What happens if you distribute the 2?” Then: “Now combine -6 and +5.” Step by step, it guided me through solving the problem on my own until I could identify where the mistake was. That’s the kind of guided practice that builds real understanding, and it’s exactly what I’d want Marc to experience when he’s stuck at 9 PM and I’m not available to help.

I also tested the “Pull a problem from my coursework” feature, which retrieved a specific problem from Marc’s Precalculus workbook by section and page number. Having practice tied directly to the material he’s already working through makes this more useful than a generic math chatbot.
